More sport for Weymouth in summer 2013?

Weymouth and Portland Borough Councillors are considering whether to repeat some of 2012's Olympic summer highlights in 2013.

The council is keen to determine the best way to utilise the much-talked-about but hard to define 'legacy' of hosting the games. Some councillors believe that the best way to keep the memory of 2012 alive is to do it all again this summer.

Among the projects being put forward as a priority include:

Developing a 2013 Summer to Remember Festival with beach sports arena, live site, ambassadors and torch wading

Investigating whether a small part of Weymouth seafront could be pedestrianised in the summer and more cycle parking provided

Ensuring that contacts are continued with the 500 business leaders who visited in Games time

Supporting the continued regeneration of Osprey Quay with the site owners, the Homes & Communities Agency, capitalising on the land available and great connectivity

Working with national tourism agencies to capitalise on the global Games time TV coverage of Weymouth & Portland and Dorset

Working with others to develop and promote outdoor activities, sports, heritage and cultural tourism themes

Developing an ambassador operation with local volunteer centres

Mike Goodman, Chairman of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Management Committee, said:

"Achieving long-term legacy benefits from being a host venue for the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events has always been a top priority for the local councils. We have already secured many significant benefits but the plan is to continue.

"The tough financial situation facing councils means we must focus on a number of priorities that have a realistic chance of being delivered and which deliver the biggest legacy benefits for local people and businesses. This means increasing participation in sport and the arts, as well as attracting businesses and people who will spend money in the area; all providing a boost for the local economy."
