Weymouth College wanted something to recognise their feelings about hitting the
milestone of 500 days to go until the start of the London 2012 Olympic &
Paralympic Games. Hosting the sailing events in Weymouth & Portland gave
the College’s art department a great idea for an installation based around
sails and waves.
Sandra
Stalker, Art and Design Technician at the College, created the 3 metre high
sails including the Olympic and Paralympic values plus a jigsaw of perspex
waves for the students to make their mark.
The waves
were taken around tutor groups during the week of 500 days to go and asked to
write about what the Olympics, Paralympics and their supporting values mean to
them. Comments include:
Be part of
history
Living the
dream
Get
Weymouth on the map
Brings
Communities together
Anything is
possible.
Sandra then
assembled all the pieces for this permanent art installation in the College
square.

I must admit I thought all this stuff about Olympic values was a load of guff. But reading what students think about it - especially "anything is possible" and "Putting Weymouth on the map" makes this old cynic feel quite fluffy and part of the global village, thank you Weymouth College!

ReportIs that all it is until the Olympics, 500 days? It doesn't seem that long ago they came up with the idea to bring the sailing here. It'll be gone before we know it!
