Portland Port gets tough on trespassers

A significant change to the law came into
effect as of the beginning of September.
It certainly will affect those who like to
go for the pedestrian equivalent of a joyride around Portland Port.
The land, now under the ownership of Portland Harbour Authority, has already been
fenced off in order to keep members of the public out of the port site.
But this wasn’t a sufficient enough deterrent to
keep some people out, and further acts of vandalism took place. So what’s
changed as of 1st September? Well, the rules relating to trespass on
private land are changing, and this will now make it a criminal offence to
enter the site of Portland Port – and anyone found therein will be liable to
prosecution. A hard stance is expected to be taken in the
interest of personal safety.
Signs are to be placed at Portland Port
advising that the area is now private land and that trespassing is not allowed
under any circumstances. The move has been made in an effort to keep those that
access the site safe due to the potential hazards that lie within it.
