Pavements on Weymouth’s Esplanade could be widened to create a larger area for outdoor dining and cafes.

Weymouth and Portland District Council has already widened the pavement between East Street and Bond Street, but it now hopes to extend the scheme from Bond Street to New Street if the plans are approved by councillors.

In all 16 parking spaces will be lost if it goes ahead.

Councillor Peter Chapman said: “This will also help local businesses gain the most from what is one of the town’s most outstanding locations.

“And it will help increase the contribution to the local economy.”

This is an excellent plan. An even more controversial idea is to widen the pavements along Custom House Quay. This would create a wonderful area for al fresco eating and drinking, and move Weymouth into Continental mode. At the same time why not remove the tramway rails? As much as many would like to see some sort of tram operating along there, we all know it's not likely to happen, and the rails are at present a danger to cyclists and motor-cyclists.

It would meet a lot of opposition from fishermen and others who use the parking on the quayside.

We need to remember that the old part of Weymouth was not designed for the motor vehicle, and residents/visitors must be prepared to park out of the old town and then walk or use the buses.
