Weymouth and Portland Borough Council have opened nominations for this year's Good Citizen Awards. Every year the council seeks to recognise the efforts of people who voluntarily give their time and skills for the benefit of the community.

Last year winners included volunteers at the Weymouth Citizens Advice Bureau, British Legion supporters and various charity fundraisers. There is also an under 18s category for younger good citizens.

Cllr Margaret Leicester, Mayor of Weymouth & Portland, said: "The Good Citizens Awards recognise the wonderful efforts of those in the borough who voluntarily give up their spare time for many good causes.

"There are many unsung heroes throughout Weymouth and Portland who deserve recognition and I am in a privileged position in being able to present them with their awards.

"If you would like to nominate a good citizen, please get in touch with the borough council and help us reward their efforts."

Nomination forms are available from the council's North Quay offices, by telephoning 01305 838216, and can also be downloaded on the council's website at

You can only nominate, or be nominated if you live in the Borough. Judges will deliberate in January and the awards will take place in April 2013.
