Weymouth resident, Michele Marlow, is calling on
the people of Weymouth & Portland and the rest of the South West to
vote for her to win a national learning award.
Michele, 43,
was recently crowned the South West’s Outstanding Learner at the
learndirect Achievement Awards. She will now battle it out against 11
other regional winners across England and Wales for the learndirect
People’s Choice Award, voted for by the UK public.
Michele is
a single mum, who went to learndirect at Weymouth College lacking
confidence but keen to develop new skills to update her qualifications.
Despite having a serious illness, Michele passed her word processing,
spreadsheets and CLAIT qualifications, all to a high standard. She then
progressed on to an ITQ, undertaking work experience at the centre to
help complete required tasks. Michele has also gone on to achieve her
Level 2 Maths qualification, and her tutors are rightly very proud.
Laura
Williams, Centre Manager and Facilitator at Weymouth College, who
nominated Michele for the award, said: “Despite suffering from a
serious illness, Michele has always been determined to learn, missing
just one learndirect session in two years, which is incredible. Not
once did she moan about her health problems - her commitment to learn
always shone through. Michele is an inspirational learner.”
The
People’s Choice Award recognises the learner who has the most
inspirational story to tell about how they have overcome difficulties,
disability or adverse circumstances to achieve through learning. To win
the national award, Michele needs people from the South West to vote
for her.
To back Michele as your favourite learner, go to www.learndirect.co.uk/awards
from the 16 August and cast your vote. The People’s Choice Award winner
will be announced at the national learndirect Achievement Awards
ceremony in October, which will take place in London.
