By Margery_H | Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 11:58
If you're a child, Weymouth is probably one of the best places in the world to be spending the summer holidays.
-
Put your feet up mum!
There's plenty going on for all ages, but the resort caters particularly well for young people.
There's the long, sandy beach, of course - great for sandcastles and having fun with the family - and the clear, safe waters.
But there is much more to Weymouth than the seafront, with its donkeys, rides and amusement arcades - which for many kids are just the best thing to be doing on long hot summer days.
Our events listings feature a number of things you do with the family - please add your own, and reviews of clubs and leisure centres and places your kids particularly enjoy.
Here are just some of the things happening in Weymouth this summer:
RSPB Radipole Lake - keep the kids busy during the summer holidays, bring them along to Radipole Lake anytime during the school holidays and let them run wild! Bird bingo And wildlife explorer backpacks will be available for hire all summer. For more information contact Radipole Lake on 01305 778313.
Haunted Harbour Tour – every Wednesday throughout the year, weather
permitting. Discover the long forgotten haunts of history around the
famous Old Weymouth and Melcombe Regis Harbour. Many of the
harbourside Inns have reputed haunted happenings and sightings.

Weymouth Sea Life Centre - the park's unique mix of indoor and outdoor attractions make this a
great family day out. Enrol in the amazing Shark Academy for the day,
enjoy close encounters at the touchpool and learn about the success of
the renowned seahorse breeding programme currently underway.
Abbotsbury Swannery - this is the only place in the world
where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting
Mute Swans.
The Deep Sea Adventure is a fascinating family attraction telling the
story of underwater exploration and marine exploits from the 17th
Century through to the most modem techniques in use today, including
the story of the Titanic Disaster.
Abbotsbury Children's Farm, Church
Street, Abbotsbury, Weymouth

Brewers Quay and Timewalk - telling the story of Weymouth's turbulent
past and strong maritime connections as seen through the eyes of Miss
Paws, the brewery cat and her eight feline ancestors. The journey takes you
back in time to the 14th century & recreates the sights, sounds and
smells of six hundred years of maritime history.
Great Dorset Maize Maze, Rodden, near Weymouth - brilliant attraction designed by the world's leading maze designer,
Adrian Fisher. Unique designs every year, giant turf labyrinth, family,
all day attraction including outdoor activities with food, farm park

Weymouth Treasure Hunt starts at the Tourist Information Centre, Esplanade, Weymouth, DT4 7AN
A treasure hunt is a great way of getting the kids, grandchildren, mum
and dad, grandma and grandad, in fact the whole family out and about in
the fresh air doing something a bit different at the weekend or in the
holidays. Whether you are young or old from Weymouth or just visiting,
by following the directions and solving the clues along the way you

ReportI’m really keen on history and like to take the kids to places where they can find out more about their local area in years gone by.
There are all sorts of museums and attractions in Dorset but, locally, I like Weymouth Museum, which is located on the first floor of Brewers Quay.
It’s home to the Borough Collection, which reflects the physical, cultural and economic history of the area. Best of all, entry to the museum is free.
Portland Museum is in two thatched 17th century cottages above Church Ope, one of which was a known location from Thomas Hardy's novel, "The Wellbeloved".
There are exhibitions on shipwrecks, the history of stone, local archaeology, and Dr Marie Stopes, the famous birth control pioneer, who gifted the cottages to the people of Portland in 1930. Fossil collection, garden, picnic area, refreshments and shop.
The museum is open every day during 1 July to 31 August from 11am to 4.30pm. Admission is: adults: £2.20, seniors: £1.10, students: £1.10. Under 16s get free entry but children under 12 must be accompanied.
