Romance by candlelight: clink glasses over a bottle of something lovely
The best places to treat someone to dinner in Weymouth and Portland are: Perrys, Mallams, Vaughans, Crabhouse and BlueFish. These are basically the best restaurants in town - which means you might have to flash the cash and dress to impress. But she’s worth it!
Perry’s is a Weymouth institution. The town’s leading restaurant, it is the only one listed in the Michelin, the AA Restaurant Guide and Harden’s. It is spread over two floors in an imposing Georgian townhouse, with spectacular views over Weymouth’s historic harbour. A set dinner will set you back £24.95 for three courses, with local specialities including spiced tian of Portland crab.
Gleaming crystal glasses, pristine white linen, cutlery polished to perfection: the stage is set for another great evening at Mallams Restaurant. Sit and enjoy the best food, great views, excellent wines and exciting cocktails and drinks. Mallams is recommended by Motor Boat & Yachting Magazine. Their special Valentines Day menu includes canapes on arrival followed by three courses, including exotic fruits served with a warm dark chocolate dipping sauce and Chantilly whipped cream, to share. This comes at a cost of £39.95 per person.
Vaughans restaurant offers an A La Carte menu based around utilising the best local seasonal produce with a slight emphasis on Mediterranean flavours. Daily fish specials are available often using fresh fish and shellfish landed that day by local fishing boats. They also offer freshly baked bread and you may also be tempted to try one of their home-made desserts, all created fresh on the premises.
Crab House Cafe at Ferrybridge is rightly renowned as the hidden pearl of the South West and enjoys rave reviews in the national press. They chalk their menu up twice a day depending on the fresh catch brought in each day by local fishermen on local boats, weather permitting. The main course menu starts from a tempting £11.95.
The BlueFish Cafe and Restaurant is the best place to eat on Portland. As well as extremely popular moules frites nights it also offers weekday lunch specials - two courses for £10 - and in the evenings, two or three course meals are on offer for £19 or £23 respectively. A La Carte is also available, so make sure you contact the BlueFish now to make sure you and your amour enjoy a really special evening together on Valentines Day.
Do you disagree with any of these suggestions? Where would you most like to take your Valentine for a romantic dinner a deux?
Some other places that are great for any kind of date are Enzo (Italian), Hamiltons, Ta Dyo Adelphia (Greek - amazing welcome and very European atmosphere), Sense has interesting food fusions and the Balti House in Commercial Road serves up a cracking curry.

ReportFish and chips on the quayside in the freezing cold, that's what Mrs Stanley and I will be doing. If I turn up with flowers unexpectedly, she'd think I was having an affair.

ReportWhy has this country now become so commercialized? Why should we be forced to bow to pressure of restaurants, gift card manufacturers and florists, and pamper our wives only one day every year? That's not romance, any fool can do that. Taking your wife or husband out for a special treat when they're not expecting it is what romance is all about, and is what keeps a healthy marriage alive, but I guess you youngsters are too busy rushing everywhere to have the time to do it more than once a year anyway.
