Weymouth people - what do you think about plans to build this 53 metre high viewing tower by the Pavilion?

The "Weymouth Eye" viewing tower would be just the boost needed to rejuvenate the town. If Weymouth doesn't move forward, it will die.
There are too many Weymouth folk stuck in the past who are opposed to change.
I went to see the exhibition yesterday and discussed the project with the senior staff from Merlin.
This is proposed as the first of a number of similar towers to be built in Europe. It would be built of stainless steel and would bring in much-needed extra tourism.
The doom and gloom merchants opposed the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, and that is now attracting thousands of visitors every week, who spend a lot of cash in the city.
Let's hope the planners give the project the go-ahead to help bring Weymouth out of the doldrums!

I want the tower, but I want it to be better - it should be more iconic, like the Spinnaker Tower or the Angel of the North. I don't think the design looks particularly inspiring. It's not very high, barely higher than the Pavilion. Maybe I could be persuaded.

Of course the Spinnaker Tower is an iconic structure, but at an iconic price! Let's get real - we're now in a different economic climate. The Spinnaker Tower cost £35 million, of which the local council had to pay £11 million. The "Weymouth Eye" will cost £3 million and is being funded by Merlin.
At the present time, if a private company wants to invest £3 million in Weymouth to create the first of a series of European towers, then we must back it all the way, subject of course to the usual planning safeguards.
Incidentally, have you been to the exhibition and discussed the project with Merlin?

Yes - I went along just now. I spoke to the manager of the Sea Life Park who made some really good points and showed me plans to erect a sort of avenue of boat sails at the foot of the tower. That suits me! I'm now sold on the idea - come on Weymouth, let's get this tower built!
