Dorset Police is warning drivers they could be locked up if they drink and drive over the festive season.

The warning comes with the news that, two weeks into the Force’s annual Christmas drink and drug driving campaign, 44 people have already been arrested across the county.

There have been increased traffic patrols, as well as road-side checks, since the campaign started on 1 December – and these will continue until it ends, on 1 January 2011.

Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, Head of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit, said: “The next two weeks will see Christmas party season in full flow with lots of people out celebrating and enjoying themselves.

“I want people to have a good time, but what I don’t want to see is anyone stupid enough to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

“We are carrying out additional patrols throughout the Christmas period and – as the 44 people we’ve already arrested would know – if you do drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs you will be caught by Dorset Police officers and will spend time behind bars.

“If you are going out for a drink, then plan ahead to make sure you can get home safely without having to drive. Take simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver in your group of friends or arranging overnight accommodation.

“Drivers also need to be aware that they could still be over the limit the morning after a night of drinking alcohol.

“If a member of the public suspects someone is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they should dial 999 immediately and report the details to the police so that the vehicle can be intercepted.”

Chief Inspector Bob Nichols added: “I also urge friends and relatives of drivers who are considering driving after drinking alcohol to do everything they can to ensure this doesn’t happen.”

The legal consequences of being caught drink driving are extensive. They include a minimum 12 month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.

44 drink drive arrests have been made between 1 and 14 December 2010.

During the 2009 drink drive campaign, a total of 103 drivers were arrested. Almost 50% of these drivers were under the age of 30.

Members of the public can report drink drivers by calling Dorset Police on 999 or 222 222, or by calling the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line, on 0800 555 111.

Agree with comment above from McAngry. So when do we introduce this? I am sure the police have better things to do without wasting time on drink drivers. If they are all banned or banged up, it will surely reduce the numbers on Weymouth's roads and save even more lives.

The limit should be zero and the price for drink driving should be a minimum of a five year ban, then the convicted should have to resit their tests, including the theory, before they are allowed back out on to the road. An offence while banned should result in a six month prison sentance. Don't be soft on these killers.
