West Dorset District Council has just released a new leaflet ‘Do you want to be a district councillor?’, which is available to anyone wishing to stand as a councillor next year.
The leaflet provides information about who can stand for election, the nomination process and what the role of a councillor involves. It also includes information about time commitments, allowances and the support provided to district councillors.
For more information visit the council's website, contact the Democratic Services team on 01305 252394 or email democratic@westdorset-dc.gov.uk
If you are interested in standing as a councillor, you will need a nomination pack which is available from Electoral Registration at West Dorset District Council. Please email electoral.registration@westdorset-dc.gov.uk or telephone 01305 252208. The pack will provide all the information you need such as the forms to complete, the nomination process and details about the council.
It includes the answers to questions such as: what does the district council do? What is the time commitment? And, will I get paid? (There is no salary for being a councillor, however you will be paid an allowance to reimburse you for time and expenses incurred whilst on council business.)

That's a REALLY funny comment from Buymyhouse - "It's the politics that puts me off being a councillor" hahahahahahaa. Oh well done for that top quote - you made my night - thanks. :-)

ReportWell, somebody has to do it otherwise we have no democracy. It's easy for us to sit in our armchairs pontificating about all the rights and wrongs but councillors do actually get off their a**es and put their heads above the parapet. We can agree or disagree or stand for election to show how it should be done. There are plenty of independent councillors so the party politics thing is no excuse. So, don't just carp from the sidelines, do something about it.

ReportBut Chickerell needs a strong voice so it doesn't get absorbed by Weymouth. Although I've never understood why Chickerell is part of WD and not W&PC. Do Chickerell people not feel more part of Weymouth?

ReportIt's the politics that puts me off being a councillor. I have sat in countless council meetings and seen elected members act for the best interests of their party, rather than the good of the people who elected them/whose taxes they spend. Also the backstabbing and *****ing that goes on would put children in a playground to shame. I would like to act as an independent but the truth is in our local democratic systems, there's safety in numbers and it's very difficult to achieve anything if you're just on your own.

ReportWho in their right mind would be a councillor? If you're in it to better the local community, all you get is grief. If you're in it for yourself though, to bolster your own ego, I say go for it. You might even get to walk through new corridors of power if they ever build that ivory tower in Dorch.
