PRAYERS were said in Weymouth and Portland churches today, as the town united in grief over the death of a two-year-old boy in Chickerell.
The tot was reported missing from his home just before lunchtime on Friday. Police officers and the force helicopter searched the surrounding area. He was found in a nearby pond just half an hour afterwards, and rushed to Dorset County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Local paper the Dorset Echo reported that emergency services personnel were left in tears after dealing with the accident.
An inquest into his death is expected to be opened this week. Police say they are treating this as a 'tragic accident'.
Residents and journalists from across the UK have been sending out their condolences to the family of the dead boy, on social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
AliOteda, of Westminster, in London, said: 'Heart goes out to the toddler in Weymouth who got lost and drowned in a pond...can't imagine the loss of a son in such a way...'
South West radio broadcaster Luke Da Costa said: 'Heart goes out to the parents of Weymouth toddler found dead in a tragic accident.'
Scores of people have contributed to a message forum set up by Wessex FM on their Facebook page.
Jan Gray said: 'As a mother and grandmother I cannot imagine what this family are going through, my heart and thoughts go out to you..R.I.P little one xxx'
And Joe Snell said: 'God Bless little man. Sleep tight, live your dreams through your family's dreams. Words can never be enough for a tragedy like this, mine and my families thoughts with you all. xXx'
