Weymouth
-
students and staff on the balcony of the Salou Tourist Office
College's BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism 1st and 2nd year students
visited Spain's most popular tourist destination this month to find out what
makes it so special.
Lecturer
Tonia Fisher explains why they chose Salou as this year's destination: "As a
destination, Salou has the scope to appeal to a variety of visitors, for
example, city break customers visiting Barcelona, families visiting the beach
and the theme park, Port Aventura, older customers visiting the cultural city
of Tarragona. This resort has now increased its visitor numbers to make it the
no.1 most visited resort in Spain, overtaking Benidorm! We had a talk and presentation with the Salou
Tourist Board and they explained their marketing and promotional campaign,
which included visitor figures and customer markets, and also why they believe
they are the top destination in Spain and how they have achieved this. It was
very interesting!
"It is a
compulsory trip for the 1st years because it links to their Residential Unit,
it also links to other units such as Reps, Europe, Visitor Attractions,
Handling Air Passengers, Tour Ops, Cabin Crew and Customer Service."
Since
returning, the students have had to evaluate and peer assess their
participation in the trip so they can complete the unit.
As part
of the 2nd year study, all of the students had to complete a 2-week
work experience placement in April. They
were very successful with over half being offered employment. Most of these students
will have begun jobs in the travel and tourism industry before they leave the
College, which they have been offered due to our employer links or their work
experience. Seven of them have chosen to continue their studies at university
on degrees such as Cruise Management at University of Plymouth, Business
Management at Liverpool University, International Tourism Management at Brighton
University, and Travel & Tourism Management at Guildford University.
Zack
Simons, 2nd year student, said: "It was amazing and the best trip ever!!"
Next
year's planned residential will be Lake Garda, Italy, visiting Verona, Venice,
Gardaland and more!!
Comments
wow! compulsory trip to Spain! what a hardship! Not sure what peer assessing is. And how can there possibly be a degree in cruise management?!? Good on them though, and good luck after you leave Weymouth College!
