A Weymouth street was blocked tonight after a lorry tried to squeeze round a corner - and nearly hit a pub.

At around 6pm, the TK Maxx goods vehicle came to a standstill just inches away from The Star pub, on the junction of Park Street and Gloucester Street in the Park District.

It appears the lorry also scraped past a Peugeot 205, leaving what look like long black marks in the white paint. Ironically, the lorry's livery bore the TK Maxx advertising slogan of: "Does my chassis look big in this?" The answer, unfortunately, is "yes".

There was much scratching of heads and wincing as the driver tried to work out what to do next. He could not move forward without hitting the pub. He could not move backwards without hitting the O-reg Peugeot 205. A small crowd gathered as oncoming traffic in Park Street, a one-way street, was forced onto pavements to get back to Commercial Road. Access to The Esplanade was completely blocked.

A member of staff in the nearby Eden beauty salon stood in the doorway and watched the drama unfold. Residents watched from windows looking down onto the street.

It is not known what the TK Maxx lorry was doing in Park Street, as it is not the usual corridor used by goods vehicles accessing New Bond Street, where the Weymouth branch of TK Maxx is located.

One bystander told Weymouth People: "I dread to think what the owner of the Peugeot will say when they come back and find the lorry wedged there. I expect the air will turn blue. What is the lorry doing going down Park Street anyway? Maybe it was a sat nav sending it the wrong way."

The lorry has gone now. But the Peugeot's front passenger door seems to be "slightly unhinged" :0
