Former professional footballer Paul Mitchell has been passing on some of his sporting skills to youngsters at Wyvern Academy in Weymouth.
Pupils (L-R) Chantelle Edwards, Reece Johnson and Corin Churchill, with Paul Mitchel of Prokick Schools Challenge
The former midfielder dropped in to visit the school ahead of its ProKick Schools Challenge on October 25 for a team 'pep talk'.
The sponsored event involves pupils taking turns to kick a football into a giant goal which uses radar equipment to register its speed.
Judy Gage, head of Wyvern Academy's secondary department, said: "Everyone at the academy is planning to join in. Those who are unable to kick the ball can throw it, and Paul will help any who have more restricted mobility."
Money raised at the event will be shared between the Sports Connection Foundation (SCF) and Wyvern Academy.
SCF supports an orphanage in Malawi, and also helps children with life-threatening conditions in the UK fulfil their dreams to meet their sporting heroes, join in or watch special sporting events.
"The students chose the charity themselves and are really excited about taking part in the challenge, and about raising money for the school with the support of family and friends," adds Judy.
Medals will be awarded to students with the fastest kick. All participants will receive a certificate. Students who raise over £25 in sponsorship will be presented with a leather football.
Paul Mitchell, SCF member and former player for AFC Bournemouth, West Ham and Torquay United, said: "Many of Wyvern's students are big football fans and can't wait for their special day.
"Staff will be taking part too, which the children are excited about – but not quite as much as about seeing their own speeds flashing up on the radar screen."
"I know they'll all be giving it their best shot!"
Wyvern Academy is a purpose-built school for youngsters aged from two to 19, with complex needs, including Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
